Redundancy versus benefits

I am currently on a career break and have applied for voluntary redundancy. The pay off package is excellent and tax free, we are planning to pay off debt if I'm lucky enough to get it which would be such a release after battling for years with it. However starting to panic as I hadn't looked into whether it would affect my housing benefit and child tax credit. Obviously this has been worked out on my not earning anything for the coming tax year but if I suddenly get upwards of 20k into my account will they look at that as earnings and stop my benefits. Really wanted to pay off debt with it.
