Decking Question

I'm attempting to put down decking for the first time and have a fair idea of the materials I need to cost it up.
One thing I'd appreciate advice on is the joists to support the boards. I will have 12 posts sunk for the joists to attach on to but should the joists be attached both sides of the posts in the middle of the decking or would it be sufficient on just one? The posts will be roughly a metre apart and well concreted in.
