Garage Extension

Hi all
We have just last weekend moved into our new place after four months of refurb (yipee!).
It has a single detatched garage at the moment. We are interested in extending it into a double detatched garage. As there is a car length between the house and the garage at the moment, it would be a case of building the extension towards the house (although not attaching it to the house).
Does this sort of work require planning permission and fall within building regs? What should our first steps be? We are in the Eastbourne area
Many thanks!

It can require planning permission, but it's impossible to advise without seeing a plan of the site, knowing the dimensions of the existing and proposed garage and knowing if you live in a conservation area, an AONB or the South Downs National Park (if you live in any of those three areas - then the answer is definitely yes - you will require planning permission).0

If this helps, I have checked the council website and looked at the boundaries for the national park, conservation areas etc. and our property is not located within them.
I've posted a picture below of our land. Yellow outlines our boundary, red shows what we're generally thinking of (basically doubling the width, maybe slightly extending it), blue on the birds eye view shows current size of the garage.

Why don't you just ring your council and ask them.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Thanks for the extra info. The relevant legislation to ascertain whether this is 'permitted development' is set out in Class E of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995, as amended in 2008. It seems like your proposal to extend the garage would comply with most of the relevant criteria in Class E, however you will need to check the height - it looks like it is flat roofed and located within 2 metres of the boundary, therefore no part of the proposed or existing parts of the garage can exceed 2.5 metres in height. If it exceeds that, it will need planning permission from the Council.0
