PPI for a Barclaycard

I have a Barclaycard with a balance of just under £4k which I'm paying off at between £200 and £300 per month.
I've been employed on an annual contract for 7 years. I fully expect my contract to be renewed early next month.
However, given the current economic climate, it would be foolish of me to automatically assume that I'll always be safe.
I understand that, as my contract has been renewed more than twice, I have just the same rights as a permanent member of staff and would be entitled to a redundancy payment if my contract were not renewed. I know that a redundancy payment wouldn't be much but I think the fact that I'm entitled to it demonstrates my job security is better than temporary work.
Anyway, I once read on this site that obtaining PPI independently of your credit card provider is usually far more cost efficient. however, I can't find any info about it now.
Would anyone know where to look?
