My OH had to smash a pane in the door last night (old wooden one with 3 panes in), as we were locked out. It needs replacing urgently, what can we do?
Im currently saving money as in debt, so was thinking to try an glaze it ourselves, but we are clueless!
Called a few places but they want around £80 and it will take about 5 days to get it done.
Anyone got any reccomendations? Im in the SW
Thanks xx

Assuming its single glazed, remove the securing wooden
battens, measure the size the pane should fit into take a sample of the glass with you and get a replacement at your local glaziers.
You will need to fit with putty or silicone to seal out the weather and replace the battens. That's about it really.0 -

As Alanobrian says really.
The hardest part is removing all the hard putty from the rebate, but basically just replace what's there.

Because it's a door. The glass MUST be toughened or laminated. Laminated is thicker, but can be cut straight away. Toughened is standard for doors, but has to be ordered. This can take anywhere from a couple of days, to a week to arrive at the glaziers.
DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO PUT NORMAL GLASS IN!!! I've seen a door caught by the wind, and someone put their hand out to stop it. Their hand went straight through the normal glass (an old door), and needed very serious hospital treatment and months of recovery. It's reasons like this that toughened or lamineted is required by building regs for doors now.How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
