Picking A Car

Im a 22 year old male passed my driving test last years but only work part-time. Have been looking recently into getting a car but alot of what i have seen would take alot of saving for me.
I have been told to look at offers, finance and car loans but i can't understand most of the information and with me still working part time options are limited.
Can anyone give me advice for what i should look at as a first time buyer?

What about cars under a grand? Mind you you'll still have to pay road tax, insurance and MOT.
