symbol menu cursor has vanished on SE 290i

My SE 290i phone's symbol menu when texting no longer works as the cursor has disappeared ie when I press 'add symbol' the symbols appear but are unable to be accessed. Is there anything simple I can do to make it work please? The rest of the phone is working fine. It's a relatively new cheapish PAYG from ebay and would probably cost more to fix than the phone. Having said that, it's not a bad little phone if this can be sorted out. Thanks.

you could always try a master reset (you may lose all your file and settings)

I lost my downloaded ringtone of the Black Eyed Peas
As Tesco WAP doesn't work on the phone (installs but doesn't activate) am now stuck with the stupid SE preloaded ringtones.
But I can text as did a master reset. Thanks.0
