Rusty sump now has a hole...

my father in LAw has had a mild oil drip for a few months and never bothered getting it looked at. Today I pointed out that under his car (X reg Punto) there was an oil patch the size of a shoe box.
I stuffed my head underneath said car to find oil dripping from the sump.
A little further poking and prodding led me to find that the sump had actually rotted at the front edge and this is where the oil was coming from!
I've never heard of, or known a sump to go rusty to the point it actually has a hole...!!

Most are now made of alloy, but not the case on older vehicles....
It could be a sign of water in the oil (water is heavier than oil) and rotted from the inside out.
More than likely it just took a knock to the sump and started from that.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

When I purchased my Mazda 323f in 2002 (six years old) the sump had rotted through from the outside. The engine was that oil tight the outside was bone dry. Don't know if it was a common problem, the local dealer had one on stock. Car still going strong, never uses any oil, water or power steering fluid

The core plugs go then its engine margarine time, happened to a Panda I used to have, wasnt that dear to get fixed and went another 20k after that before selling it at 140k miles.
My other halfs Micra is starting to leak through the sump, need to keep an eye on it and get it fixed when it turns to a drip.0 -
My 12 year old Rover has the same problem. At the last 2 services, before refilling the oil, the garage have pasted some 'chemical metal' on the porous bits and suggested i get the sump changed.... nearly 3 years on and no leaks...0

Some cars, including yours, have this porous sump problem. It's so common that your dealer and factor will have them on the shelf.0

to a trader a sump will only be about £50.26 P INC VAT with the sealant and sump plug, 1.2 51 plate punto has the same problem in my street.
motor factors dont usually carry sumps on the shelf but can get them sameday from suppliers, please note that some CHEAP sumps may not come with the sump plug HOLE in and will require some drilling and helicoiling.0
