Hi all,

Just need some advice on a few things for our holiday to Toronto, Canada on June the 9th to June 16th.

We've booked the flight tickets, but we arent sure which hotel to stay at - either in Downtown or outside the Downtown area.

If we do stay outside Downtown area, is there any need to hire a car or will public transport be sufficient as I hear the traffic in Downtown is not good? Also, how much would we be looking at for the cost of car hire roughly?

Finally, in terms of spending money, is it advisable to use our Credit Card (HSBC) OR use just cash OR travellers cheques or something or a combination of all 3?

Hope you all can help me with this query fellow MSE's :D !

Thank you in advance.

  • wheres Downtown, is it a town in canada or you staying in toronto / vancouver I'm confused.

Use a credit card for purchase (do not use to withdraw cash)
use a debit card at ATMs to draw money out, but not for purchases (as fees tend to be high).
You will need money for public transport small snacks etc

    Hi,
You won't need to hire a car if you are staying in downtown or even a few miles out.
You are right, traffic in Toronto can be very hectic but the main problem is parking, this is very expensive and there are not a great deal of areas to park many hotels charge a lot of money to park in their car parks.
To be honest it's really not worth having a car unless you want to go out to Niagara falls but you can easily take a bus tour out there, there is a greyhound bus from Downtown bus terminal this is way cheaper than booking a tour.
I have stayed at the Sheraton downtown x 3 the days Inn and the Bond place hotel and also out in the suburbs of Missisauga( this is a bit far out though).
The hotels I have mentioned are pretty good but the Sheraton is the best the others are a little cheaper.
The sheraton is close to city hall, has a direct stop outside for the airport bus and is near the Eaton centre shopping mall.
Toronto is a good walking city with a good Metro(underground system) and good buses,I personally found Taxis very expensive.
As you can tell I am very fond of Toronto!

Some other tips to mention is that clothes are not as cheap as the US,be aware the prices displayed do not always include Govt tax, this is added at the till.
Make up is cheaper..especially MAC as it's Canadian.
If you want to go to the CN tower go early....just after it opens before the big queues build up.
All in all Toronto is a very nice city (kind of New York Lite)
    Have a great time.
