In our area, it says that the condition suffered from, must require medical intervention to recover from a bad spell. i.e. Diabetes or Asthma requiring ambulance / doctors attendance to control an event.

You can't have DLA for Diabetes! Only for the major complications that create needs - Loss of eyesight or loss of legs.

Even Hypos & Hypers are not counted as requiring or needing care. They are in the main easilly controlled by the sufferer.

If I am wrong, I am sure that Diabetes UK would love to hear that that is the case!!

Divicular disease is a normal part of the ageing cycle, by the late fourties nearly everyone has small pouches in their intestines that can become enflamed, which can lead to abnormal passages and absesses in the intestines and it in itself is not normally a condition that you can claim DLA for, even in the worst forms of the disease but when in congunction with other ill health care and/or/mobility needs may be present but only rarely.

Verbatim from my husbands gastro today.

There is no LIST of diseases or disabilities that you can/cannot get DLA for.
It all depends on your NEEDS.

Thanks people. Her mobility is quite good, she only needs care when her stomach hurts, ie- help to the toilet or giving her food. Its an illness which makes her go to the toilet 4+ times a day, sometimes she soils herself. The pains can last upto 3-4 days at a time. When this bout of pain starts she lies all day on the sofa or doesn't even get out of bed.

All you can do really, is apply, Pretani.

The forms will give your mum the possibility to detail how her condition affects her and where she feels she has care needs.

Quite often people may not receive help but if your mum doesn't apply, she will never know if she qualifies or not.

It all depends on your NEEDS.

First of all there is a list see:

    http://www.dwp.gov.uk/publications/specialist-guides/medical-conditions/a-z-of-medical-conditions/diabetes/

Secondly it is widely accepted by all sufferers of Type 1 Diabetes that there are no needs or mobility problems. This is confirmed by Diabetes UK, the national Diabetes charity.
To take the time to fill out a claim form for someone with no complications, over 16 and Type 1, will be a waste of their time and that of the DWP when reviewing it.

With Type 1 - insulin dependent Diabetes, all sufferers who don't have complications of the legs and eyes, are able to function as well as anybody else that is normal. Look at Steve Redgrave - that's a prime example!! http://www.steveredgrave.com/diabetes.html
The only time that care needs or mobility problems arise in diabetes is if you have any of the complications that go with the disease.

My mother has just been diagnosed with this and has had bowel problems, stomach pains for a few years now. It effects her day to day life, so I was wondering if it was worth while her applying for DLA?

The following is an extract from the DWP handbook on the accepted disabling condition. It lists what things the DWP will take into account when applying for DLA

I'm not getting you, diolch. I am not saying theat there is no such thing as diverticular disease or Diabetes etc. I am well aware that they exist.
Unless I have missed something, the links you posted do not say that these conditions are or are not eligible for DLA.
There is no list of conditions which are not eligible for DLA as it all depends on the claimants' needs for help with their mobility or personal care.
It is well known that Diabetes for example can lead to many conditions, some of which may result in a claimant's need for help which DLA could help to pay for.

The link I gave to the list of diseases is the list that they use when assessing for DLA.

All of those conditions listed do give a possible entitlement to DLA, but as you say it all depends on the claimant and how it affects their needs and/or mobility.

So yes all of them do carry a right to DLA, what you as the claimant would have to show is how it affects you.
