courgettes can be thinly sliced and cut into spagetti like strips, boil for a few minutes and serve instead of pasta with a omato and onion sauce accompanied by a herby green sald. very good and tasty and only a few calories.

Or use a potato peeler to make the ribbons, then just coat with pesto. Incredibly cheap but full of flavour.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Yup you are officially Rock n Roll :D
  • Courgette fritters for us:
Grate two large ones, add a beaten egg and enough flour to make a dropping consistency batter. Add some extra flavourings: finely crumbled feta, chopped dill, finely chopped chilli are all good. Fry spoonfuls in oil. delicious:D

I think its good fun to grow varieties that you don't see in the shops, I have purple and yellow beans, round courgettes, round cucumbers, green, black and stripey tomatoes and purple radishes. I just wish I had the space for some of those interesting coloured cauliflowers.:p
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

    Hi,

I was thinking maybe we could compile a list of how many plants you need to grow to get a worthwhile crop as I've noticed people (myself included!) are confused about how many seeds to sow, etc.
You have to work out the amounts you need yourself. Pick a number and see how it goes, you can adjust next year.
It completely comes down to how the plants grow and how much you use.

I grow about 20 tomatoes, in a good year, we'll have way too many, in a bad year, no where near enough.

    It's the same for everything.

If there were 2 of us and we try to use as much from the garden as we can when it's in season, I would grow.
    15 tomatoes
    20 climbing french beans
    5 courgettes
    2 or 3 cucumbers
Sweet peppers, wouldn't grow, not worth the space IMO
Peas, as many as you can fit in and even then it won't be near enough. As someone said, grow mangetout instead, a better use of space for small areas.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
