'mobile internet' vs 3g on a smartphone

Options
Hi All

I use my 3g sim in a smart phone using 'share connection' in windows mobile. My new phone only offers a blue tooth modem connection, much slower.

I do not understand the difference between web access on a phone and using the phone as a modem with a laptop and want to avoid unnecessary charges.

Anyone able to explain?

Nick

Using a phone as a modem and making the internet connection to it available to a computer (usually via bluetooth or WiFi) is known as "tethering". Most mobile p[hone contracts either forbid it or charge extra for it.

The pattern and volume of usage from a computer would be different from a phone and obvious to the service provider should they investigate so although you may get away with it you may not.

I tether using my iPhone without a package and have done for the last 12 months and Orange have never asked questions.
I have been tethering on average 1.5gb per month even though my 'unlimited' limited usage is 750mb.

The connection on 3g is around 1mb which is really quite good!
I would have used my own initiative if someone would have told me to!
