Wasps in Runner Bean Trench!

  • How sad that poor bees had to die. There is a crisis with bee populations worldwide at the moment, and farmers and growers are worried that crops that rely on them for pollination are going to do less well.

Bees are peaceable creatures and go out of their way to avoid contact so even if they are buzzing are definitely not being aggressive. I positively encourage them, and grow flowers among my beans to attract them to ensure maximum crops.

    RIP bees.

For future reference incase this gets linked to another thread about wasps; these are miner bees. They like dry, sparcely vegetated areas and are very docile. If you want to get rid of them mulch the area and keep it watered.

As for spiders - put conkers on your window sill or by the door, you don't get them coming in then.

I've heard conkers keep them out as well. Something to do with the chemicals in them i think, or the odour. Who knows? Its mostly anecdotal evidence but appears to work.

I too have had the same problem. I have a small garden and was digging to make a little veg patch at the bottom. Had quite a few bees buzzing around. While doing this my daughters were knocking down a little low wall to one side of this. As they got down to the base of this and lifted it with a spade we discovered a bees nest. I looked online and it advised contacting a local beekeeper which I did. The lady I spoke to said more or less just leave them alone and they won't harm you but I have to finish the jobs I was doing. Just leaving it is not practical. I also said my grandchildren were staying and she asked how old they were. When I said 14 and 9 her "helpful" comment was "oh, they're not babies then, they can just keep away. I see that Pendulam has had equally helpful replies. I dont dislike bees and killing them is not ideally what I wanted to do but its a small garden and I would like to enjoy it in this nice weather. As for the comment about if they sting it only hurts for a while - how stupid is that!
  • agreed we all love bees !!!!

cant believe youve tried to kill them - its all been said already but yeh heres another pro bee person

So you spoke to a bee expert, she didn't give you the advice you wanted, so you ignored it :rotfl:
    Classic.

You mean, Pendulum got equal helpful replies, the same as given by the bee expert you rang. Mmm, maybe that should tell you something.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
  • the advice from the beekeeper was 100% accurate !!!

you said it was stupid................. hmmmmm

maybe you should take a look at yourself....

you seem to be interested in the wellbeing of your young grandchildren ..... maybe think outside of the box and think how their future would be without any natural insects around to pollinate the fruit and vegetable plants that are necessary unfortunately for our future survival as a race... of course this will not affect you in any way so yeh you go about haphazardly using chemical insecticides that dont have the ability to choose what animals to exterminate but just indiscriminately kill all those that come within its effective range.......

    sounds intelligent to me ................:T
