Builder, joiner or roofer required for dormer window extension?

We're about to buy a house that has a sloped roof to the front of the house. There is enough floor space on the 1st floor below the roof for a room but not enough headroom to stand.

We're looking at getting quotes to add an dormer extension to provide the head room to use the space.

Pictures are easier to understand. Basically we're wanting to turn the window above the garage on the house to the left into something like the houses to the right.

Should we be contracting builders or joiners to undertake this sort of work?

    Thanks.

Any ideas on the cost of something like this? Obviously we'll be getting quotes but doesn't hurt to have a rough idea.

I recently had quite a lot of work to be done on my house and posted some details on www.mybuilder.com

You put in your location, what you need doing, etc and interested builders/roofers/whatever get in touch with you. You can ask them to come out and give you a quote if you are interested and you think they are near enough and have other good reviews. I had some "silly" interest from builders/plumbers that were miles away that I just didn't get back in touch with.

However, I did have 3 people come out to my drainage job, I employed one, job done, great price. I can't speak for everyone that has ever used that site, but in my case it was a lifesaver and meant I could finally get my 6 year old house extension signed off.

    Hope this helps.

you might run into some planning and building standards issues there too which could add a bit on to your budget
