If you do a mist coat on the PVA walls in cheap emulsion with 25% water added and then buy decent paint to finish the job you will be able to do it in one coat (expect to pay £30-£40 for 5 litres of paint which will achieve this) - the mist coat is good for practicing cutting in and roller technique.
Cut in first around all the edges - use masking tape, it's not cheating (!) and it produces a great result. With wide masking tape and a steady hand you can cut in with a radiator roller.
You only need a border of 2-3 inches around the top and bottom of the walls and into the corners then you can fill in with a roller overlapping the cut in areas slightly so you won't see the join.
Sandpaper depends on current finish. If it's rough you may need a rough paper followed by a smoother one - a cheap electric sander is a good investment as sanding is monotonous. You can buy packs of mixed paper. Before painting finish the wood with wire wool then vac to remove all the dust. You can also gloss larger areas with a radiator roller - use water based paint - it makes cleaning brushes and rollers much easier and any splashes wash off.
If you have one try a Leyland/Johnstones decorators centre. Excellent products and knowledgeable staff.0
