We did a front path really cheaply, similar scenario. Buy a roll of weed suppressor ( wilkinsons is cheap). Pop to diy store or garden centre and choose about 6 slabs 60cm x 40cm that contrast with stones. We went for dark slate effect slabs with cotswold stones. These get placed as previous posters have said in stepping stone manner. You need tomix up a bit of mortar to sit slabs on.
Bucket up stones. Lay weed stuff. Lay out slabs and get spacing right. Dollop mortar under slabs ( spirit level). Leave for mortar to dry.( can you do this overnight?) then replace stones over all remaining area. Add complementing planter by front door and hey presto. Not too much expense. Nice path. Hth0
