Speeding question

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this.

I was on a duel carriageway a few days ago for the first time since passing my test. I was a little nervous and while making sure if it was ok to change lanes i had slowly creeped up to 80mph without realising, i quickly dropped back down to 70 and carried on. The problem is i am worried it may have been during a section of average speed cameras.

Am i being overly worried over a few seconds of speeding?

Any idea what the normal penalty for this would be and how long they take to notify you?

Appreciate any help, thank you.

  • If you were only doing 80 for a few seconds you'll probably be ok - your average speed will have been nearer 70 than 80 and they do allow a few mph before they send you a nasty letter.

Seconded. All car speedos overread and with most of mine in my long history of cars,80MPH on the speedo was around 72-75 in reality which is well below the ACPO guidelines.
  • Thanks for the fast replies! That's put my mind at ease a little.
I didn't want to get in trouble for a stupid mistake. Hopefully it will be ok and I'll be sure to pay better attention next time.
