Look on the £20 as all the offerings you never paid by not attending the church for the past 20 years and all the offerings you won't be paying until you go back for the christening.

Could it be to do with registrar fees? In Chruch of England the vicar can do the legal bit but that's not the case with all churches and the registrar is effectively booked separately (even if the church takes care of it). Registrar fees generally are based on what they're set at for that year - we booked ours in 2009 and paid deposit but we will have to pay the price that applies for 2011

That's an excellent point, and if true the church could avoid these problems by quoting the registrar fees separately noting that the fees applicable at the time of the wedding will be charged.

Better still, look at it as future offerings. Every time you are in church after this and the offering plate is passed around, drop in a piece of paper saying
£20, ripped off us by StWotsit on <date> upping our wedding fee after we paid our deposit. Remission of sin to the extent of 50p. Balance outstanding £19.50
Obviously update the balance each time you do it.

Thanks, no I won't be going as far as court for £20, think I will just swollow my pride and pay the £20 if they still insist on it for a nice easy wedding where we want it. It's not worth picking the second best church just to save £20 is it I suppose! Lol the H2B may take some convincing to forego his takeaway for a weeknd.

Sheesh. Think you will find that the church is the least rip off of all wedding providers.

And how do you know the OP doesn't attend every (or most) Sunday(s) and pay into the offering etc?

OP just ask why it's gone on up £20 since you booked it...you may be happy to pay when you find out why. Fuel for heating, lighting, minimum wage rise for minister, church warden and organist, travel expenses increase for Minister, church warden, organist and anyone else associated with the church involved with your wedding?

Fees are set up by the Church Commissioners and go up each January. The church you are getting married at will pay the bulk of the fees over, they keep only a small amount.

Heh heh this is so true - the sugared almonds nobody eats for the tables will hit you for more than £20 I'm sure!

Pay it ASAP...it could be a cheap legal get out clause for your lawyer from Divorce-r-us in 5 years time?

If they did, I suspect they wouldn't be worried about £20.
