Pets?

Hi,
I'm looking at properties at the moment, and I'm finding most properties don't want pets.
Does this include animals such as reptiles, which are in secure vivariums, or is it generally just cats and dogs?
I've tried emailing a few estate agents to ask, but I haven't received a reply yet.
If it does, how does anyone with animals ever find somewhere to live?

Many LA put this in as a standard clause and you may find the LL will allow pets if asked or more deposit is paid, it is purely down to LL choice.
Best way is to view the properties that interest you and then ask if reptiles are considered pets. Always insist the LA asks the LL as many agents will just say a blanket no.
Other ways are to find LL advertising directly, like the local newspaper, then you can ask when viewing and speak directly to the person who makes the decision.
You may find if viewing flats that they will have a no pets clause in the leasehold and therefore it is non-negotiable0 -
Thank you so much for your reply

I will ask the LA to ask the landlord, as at the moment she is just saying no. To everything I ask, oddly.
Anyway, thank you again!0 -
I've never rented through an agent so can't comment on how they work, however I found the best way was to view the property and meet the landlord, convince her/him that you were a good tenant and you get on well, and then ask casually how they feel about your dog/cats/hens (in my case) and there's been no problem. I haven't had to give additional deposit or anything, which I know some landlords ask for. It might be worth offering extra deposit in case of damage.

Try to present your case to the LL, if at all possible. At least then you can understand their reasons if the answer remains no. As an example of an unusual no pet reason, I don't allow pet spiders because my member of staff who conducts inspections is severely arachnophobic and has panic attacks if they say a spider!0

As others have said, ask the landlord directly - I can't see why reptiles would cause a problem, if they're secure and well looked after. get the agents to ask the landlord rather than being fobbed off by the agent with what's in the tenancy agreement. I would be getting out there and looking first and then when you see a place you would like get them to ask the LL - possible immediate depoit money might sway an otherwise reluctant agent.0

they may have someone else interested who doesn't have pets and are just playing a waiting game.
I'd give this agent a miss if you can or try and go in when someone else is working.0
