Breakdown cover in northern Ireland aa or rac

I have just joined the rac as their breakdown cover also covers you should you break down in the republic. The aa seems to say that I needed to take eu cover which is unfair given the size of our country.

My only concern is now that after reading a few old posts on the net it appears that the rac simply get a local tow company out down south and they don't even bring you home.
Has anybody any clarification or reports on the qualiy of rac

Would be most helpful before my car breaks down on holiday down south

forest38 - I have RAC breakdown cover and a few years ago was staying with an aunt in Dublin when my car wiouldn't start one morning. I called RAC and they sent out an RAC van who got it started. No idea what would have happened if it had required taking it to a garage though. However it was a fully branded RAC van that attended and not a local company.

Why not ring them and ask them? Then you can let us all know the definitive answer:)

I wonder that on here all the time as well. People ask stupid simple questions when a call to the company would sort it out

A guy at the RAC stand on the street outside Castlecourt a few years ago told me that they didn't cover RoI. AA did so I went with them....worried now that AA have changed their policy!!

Anytime I have phoned either AA or RAC you don't get a local person and it could be difficult to get them to understand that you don't just mean driving between England & Scotland or England & Wales

I often wonder, when they have so much difficulty saying our place names, how the operators cope with the towns and villages in Wales! Recently a runflat tyre gave up near the Moira Turn Off on the M1 - couldn't believe how difficult it was for the girl to say Moira! Though other than that she was really nice and helpful!

This answer has nothing really to do with the original question - just a bit of waffle really - sorry!

Extract from page 12 of their UK Terms and Conditions document available on their website.
    Roadside,
Roadside is available in the Territory and the Republic
    of Ireland.
If Your Vehicle has suffered a Breakdown We will provide
    the following:
    – A RAC Patrol or Contractor to assist You.
    – Labour at the roadside.
    – If We are unable to repair the Vehicle within a
reasonable time, or if repairs are unwise, We will
transport the Vehicle to a destination of Your choice
within 10 miles. If You have no preferred destination,
We will take the Vehicle to a nearby garage.
    – Transport for You and up to seven passengers to the
above chosen destination. (If there are more than five
people this may require two separate Vehicles. An
adult from the covered Vehicle must accompany any
children (refers to any person under 16)).
    – If You need to leave Your Vehicle at the garage We
will reimburse You for taxi fares up to 20 miles. (A
    receipt must be obtained).
    Recovery.
Recovery is available in the Territory. but see below
    – Recovery is only available to Members who already
    subscribe to Our Roadside service.
    – We will provide the following service if We cannot get
Your Vehicle repaired locally within a reasonable time:
    – Transportation of Your Vehicle to Your Home or a
single address anywhere else in the Territory.
    – Transport for You and up to seven passengers to
the above chosen destination (If there are more
than five people this may require two separate
Vehicles. An adult from the covered Vehicle must
accompany any children (refers to any person
    under 16)).
The above Recovery service is also available should
You be taken ill and cannot continue Your journey as
You have no passengers who can drive the Vehicle.
You will need to produce some form of medical
certificate for this (In these cases, We will provide
    service at Our discretion).
Residents of Northern Ireland are entitled to be
recovered from the Republic of Ireland.
So the answer would appear to be that the RAC will cover you for breakdowns in the Republic as long as you live in Northern Ireland.
