Euro cheque?

Hi, Not sure if this post is in the right place. I am buying an item from Ireland and the only payment methods they use are direct payment into their bank or euro cheque. I am confused as I thought Euro cheques were no longer used. Could I send a normal cheque instead in the equivalent british sterling. Is there a charge connected to euro cheques. That is if they still exist, very confused, hope someone can help somewhere:(

I think what you are referring to is the Eurocheque which was a Europe-wide cheque guarantee scheme that was withdrawn in 2002 according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurocheque.

I think they are referring to a standard cheque drawn on a current account denominated in Euros. It may also have to be from a bank in the Eurozone. Obviously many millions of people still have access to these.

BACS payments are only for transactions in sterling between UK accounts.

To send a payment from your bank account to theirs, payment would need to go through SEPA or SWIFT, which will involve processing and currency conversion charges. Probably looking at £10-20 for one of these payments.
  • Thanks for all your help. So if I make out a cheque from my Lloyds account, how do I specify it is in euro's?

You can't. Your chequebook will be for sterling transactions only, hence the £ sign in the amount box.

On request, Lloyds TSB can write you a cheque in Euros for a charge of £20.
