Broadband Speeds

Hi,
When I do an availability check for Broadband they say my line can support 2Mb/s. I am 2km from the exchange. Is this figure obtained from the distance to the exchange or is it because this is the stable speed i am on at the moment.
Does the 2MB/s and 2km sound right to everyone? I did a check for my Dads house which is 1km from the exchange and it said he could have 5Mb/s.
Any Thoughts?
Mike

Distance from exchange is the main factor....
Try running checks based on phone number and postcode, see if you get much variance.

Don't forget Line Contention, most providers offer 50:1 that means upto 50 people can share your one connection from the Exchange to your area.Yellowlawn

It's not just distance you have to worry about.
Line quality is also a major factor. A poor line near the exchange would also effect the speeds you would get.Dave. :wave:0 -

Just checked mine again on my old lappy:
downstream 2,450.8 Kbps
upstream 235.2 kbps
My new lappy is around 3 downstream (don't remember upstream)
My ISP supports 8MB.
So I'd say your value sounds ok, but then I'm not that techie, so...Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
