Skoda or Touran?

No a Touran is not based on a Galaxy floorplan. I think it is based on a stretched golf chassis, or golf estate chassis.0

We are based in Kent and the company I work for does not get a lot of airport work, I guess I go a few times a year.
However do work on Friday + Saturday nights and there are usually a few jobs which require multi seater.
As well as economy, I would also be very interested to learn about the realibilit - anyone got any ideas on this?
Thanks0 -

Generally all VAG group vehicles are reliable and dont have problems too much generally upthere with the japanese brands imo.0 -
Surely it is a no brainer. If the trade off in fuel economy versus the extra seats favours one or the other then that is the one to buy. You will have to guestimate but you could increase the number of 7 seat jobs simply by going after them or advertising independently. For instance, an apartment block I know has some taxis which residents have used and are now "on the books" so to speak with first dabs at multiple seat jobs.
You also have to drive it so the driving position and kit level will be important. You'll also need to find out real world fuel economy as I suspect that is where your decision really lies.0 -
If the Touran is fitted with the older 1.9 engine then it nigh on unbreakable, even the newer 2.0 is a good engine, but doesn't have the reputation of the older 1.9 as yet.
Given the choice of sitting all day in an Octavia or a Touran then it would be Touran every time.
I have been driving the old Astra Response cars recently and yes they handle better, don't break down, do nigh in 30 mpg round town.
But given the choice I would rather sit in the later Zafira, yes they may break all the time, but they have more room and are a nicer place to sit all day.
When it comes to two vehicles as closely related mechanically as these two then always go for the one with more room.
Or pop up to NW1 and look at the retired Addison Lee vehicles, they have had 10k of these Sharon Autos over the last few years, and the blokes there will let you know about the good and bad points of putting one back to work, my mates that work at AddyLee reckon the Sharons where better liked by the drivers than the later Galaxy's but that may be down to the slightly better mpg.
The only weak spot is the autobox, AddyLee rebuild them at around 75k, regardless, but if you get one at around 100k expect to pay around £7k for an 08 plate, but expect to have to rebuild the gearbox at least once in its working life.
Getting back to the fuel economy, when I drove that 54plate down in Swindon it did pretty much the same mpg as the Mondeo Estates, mid to high 30's. But remember we were using them for emergency response and they also ran all day when on standby to keep the equipment charged up, so I would expect you would et mid 40's easy at work. The same as I would expect from the Octavia.
You need to drive them, but my choice, no brainer, Touran every time. Its the tool for the job.0 -
Thanks for the repsonses - very useful.
Must admit I favoured the Skoda a few days ago. However since I have been using a cheaper "battered" car until I buy and realise that having some "luxuries" is also very nice. With that in mind and the comments on this forum I amnow starting to favor the Touran, with the holidays I think I will now have to wait until next Tuesday and going to have a look/buy.0 -
Im afraid luxurys are a lot cheaper on the skoda than the touran!... trust me lolPlan
