Any advice about where to move to/avoid in the SW ?

Agree with Neil on the areas, but if you're not going down the private route for schools you have to pick wisely. Most secondary schools in Bristol are considered to be really poor. Exceptions are St Mary Redcliffe [if you have/can feign a massive interest in being an active God botherer]. For those not blessed with the faith, most people try to get their kids into Redland Green School or Cotham Grammar but you have to virtually live in the playground to get in as they are so oversubscribed. Bristol is a great place to live, but so is Exeter, and you get massively more for your money.0

Yatton or Congresbury are both great places to live in SW. 5/10 Min drive from the m5 and both have great schools nearby. They are both in the catchment for Churchill and Backwell which are great secondary schools... i know of people who have moved to these areas to get into these schools!!! I went to Churchill myself (left 2008) as did my younger sister and my brother is starting in September and it is a fantastic school, really great. They run free coaches from the villages to! Yatton has everything you would want in terms of amenities; Public Houses & restaurants, supermarket, Bank, chemist, Post Office, Railway Station, hairdresser, optician & Doctors Surgery and for anything else Bristol is 11 miles away! Yatton Junior School has a great ofsted report and St Andrews in Congresbury is known to be a great primary school...
If you wanted a bigger town then perhaps Portishead? This is a costal town which is a really nice place.. don't know too much about the schools there though!
Good Luck!!0
