Painting plastered walls: remove all old paint?

I've just bought a house, and I've stripped the old wallpaper from the hall and bedrooms. Most of the wallpaper and old paint came off, but there are some fairly large areas still with paint, a sort of unpleasant light green. Stripping it is hard, and time consuming. My question is this: how do I paint the walls such that there is not an obvious line where old paint meets new plaster?
My guess is apply one or two layers of diluted emulsion to the bare plaster as a primer, and sand the old paint new paint join. Then apply one or more colour top coats to the entire wall. Would this do the job?
And as an aside, a builder told me to use diluted emulsion paint as a primer on bare plaster. Someone else said use a primer called BIN. Any opinions?

you have 2 options , either strip all the paint off or give paint a good sand down and then line with paper0

Thanks nickj. I've decided that since there are only 3 or 4 square metres of painted area, the rest being bare plaster, I may as well chemically strip the paint. It's a bit messy and smelly, but it'll give the best result.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0
