Maintenance of water feature
Last summer, when renovating the garden, we took the opportunity to install a lovely water feature - my dad insists it looks like the twin towers which has kind of spoilt it - but we like it!
Anyway, through the winter, we didnt switch it on so it was some 4 months before switching it on and it gave off a rather unpleasant smell! I mean both the husband and I ran away from it!
Fortunately, we can easily access the reservoir and quickly threw some Milton tablets in and left it running and after a couple of hours the rather unpleasant odour disappeared.
However, I am now thinking that this is probably not how to look after and care for a water feature.
Any tips?

I do all the work in the garden from February right through to almost November but I am scared to open up the water feature as I am not particularly fond of the unknown so every year, that is my beloved's job... He doesn't mind so .... I think he gently powerwashes everything (on a low pressure) and cleans the gunk out of the filter etc etc... and replaces it with clean water.... Mark you, I'll suggest milton tablets to him so that we can have it in the water from the beginning but, then again, it might harm the birds that enjoy our feature... (It's like an acer except made of copper and the water runs on to the leaves so the birds love bathing in it....
I hope this helps

I doubt Milton is the best product for the job... Likely to harm wildlife etc.
Can you move te water feature into a garage for winter? Or drain it and cover?
Water in the garden is a nightmare. I have 2 medium sized ponds and they are a pain to keep clean.0
