How does NCD work if you have multiple cars?
Options
We have 4 private cars and 1 company car in our household. All cars in dh's name.
2 cars have 10 years NCD.
1 car has 7 (and is for sale)
1 (new) car has none.
We hope to sell the car with 7 yrs NCD - can we trf this NCD onto the car replacing it?
I'm not sure why some have 10 yrs and 1 has 7 yrs. It's all very confusing.
If we bought another car - would it too, be starting at zero yrs NCD?

Have you thought about insuring through a Family Fleet policy? Some brokers/insurers will allow the NCD to be mirrored on new cars.

It's worth spreading the cars out, and putting a few in your name, so you build up a ncd in your own right.0

We have been with Admiral fleet policy - and it allows you to assign the ncd to either me or hubby. Although I'll be starting from scratch as it's aways been in his name before.
We got our renewal premium through - but had to add in 2 x sp30's from last year and the premium increased by over £1000!!0 -
We insure 5 cars and vans, it's always been cheaper to insure them individually.
They are ownes/insured between three of us though.0 -
Everyting of ours is through NFU.... I forget what it cost as the receipts are'nt here... I know its cheaper than everything idividually.. All in my name as my name on V5... not 100% who can drive as its only me my GF and oldman that use them... who are 100% covered.
I looked a couple of years back at the Admiral multicar policy.. Back then I was running a Corsa Van, L200 Pick up and a Modded Golf Gti... It worked out Okish. But as I was half way though the policy I stayed as I was.0 -
Our renewal came in at £1299 for 4 cars. A Freelander, a Golf V5, a BMW and a Merc soft tops. The BMW is for sale and is holed up in a garage. dh added in 2 x SP30's he got last year and the premium went up to £2300! He told them to stick it.
Not sure how we would divi up the NCD if we went for the cheapest individually though. Can we say the new Golf has the 7 years NCD and take it off the BMW that is going shortly?0 -
They have different NCD's because thats how long you have had policies on them for. You can only use each set of NCD's against one vehicle at a time.
If hubby has two cars and has been insuring one for 5 years and both for the last 2 then he has two sets of NCD running that he can get proof on : 5 years and 2 years.
As far as I have been told the 10 years can be transferred to the new car as long as you can prove that you are not using it elsewhere.0 -
The cars don't have any NCD, the NCDs apply to the insurance policies in your husband's name.
Those NCDs can be transferred from one insurance policy to another that replaces it. For example, when you replace one car with another.
If you should decide to let an insurance policy lapse, after two years (usually) the NCD entitlement will be lost.0
