Hey there
I had someone from "Caulder Financial" knock on my door today looking for a Mr Carroll, They had written to my address (Addressed to him I returned them with a quick covering letter explaining I bought the property in January and I wasn't Mr Carroll. Infact I was a 21 year old woman.
I never got a reply, I wrote several letters but they never replied back.
As I was saying I had this "door step collector" knock on my door. I looked through the window (As I never like answering the door unless I can see who they are) he said he was from "Caulder Financial" and "If I didnt answer the door to settle my partners debt he could legally force entry if he had to". I explained that this Mr Carroll never lived her nor was he my partner. He started saying "I can get a court warrant if I have to and I will get in and take all your stuff, You are liable for this and I want paying". I said its nothing to do with me and I was scared at this point, looking for my phone to call for help. The debt collector then said "I don't need to pay money, I am a pretty lass and could sort this another way". Then within a second another man turns up, (I didn't realise this was my neighbour) asking this collector to step away as he didn't "like his attitude and its trespass as he was a mere debt collector with no legal right, and if he didn't go he would drag him away as its not nice and he is scum of the earth" The debt collector storms off.
I feel that there are good people out there, and I made a new friend. I'm just glad he was there to help
How do I go about complaining about this, I just want it to stop!

You HAVE to call the police about this! He was basically trying to bribe a payment with SEX! OMG.
Call the police, AND call the company and complain.
Also contact the CAB office as they will contact this company for you and sort it out.
I'm so so glad that your neighbour had turned up when he did!!!!
DO NOT answer the door to this company again!
He was rude, aggressive and also what he was saying was untrue! He is ONLY a debt collector, and therefore has NO legal right to forcefully come into your home at all. Even ballif (sp) cannot do this unless there is a door or window open.
If they turn up again, call the police! Thank you to everyone!

Definitely call the police and make a complaint. You have the neighbour as a witness. Other women on their own may not be so fortunate to have someone around.0

Thank you for your help
I'm glad he did come, he stayed for a bit before going back to his, he left me his mobile number and said to call if he comes again
Would the police really do anything?
I'm really scared, So the CAB would sort this? Can he really get court papers in an hour (he was saying this and other things)0 -
What a lovely neighbour
Echo the thoughts of those above re calling the police. Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0 -
Two separate issues - 1) some herbert gave your address when he took out a loan, and this company are trying to recover their money from him and assume you are his Mrs. 2) Some nasty thug turns up related to 1), makes threats of a sexual nature, and only vanished when a neighbour came to help. 2) is the one that requires police attention. You will find them very likely to send a PCSO to collect details, and want to help, even if it is just to have a word with the debt collector and scare him a little in turn. Your local force will have a (probably 0845) number to call, the call will be initially answered by a call handler who can put you through to the right department (eg "safer neighbourhoods" or similar). Do not be afraid of calling the police, I deal with different forces quite often, and almost to a man, they are professional, friendly, helpful and excellent.
As you have been advised, debt collectors have NO right of entry more than I have if I turned up at your door. If they do force their way in, the legal repercussions are HUGE. If they do, or try to, call 999 as well as your neighbour.0 -

Call the police, obviously not 999 but call your local police office about this and they will look into this.
As for the CAB office, YES they will help. I was being pestered by a debt collecting company (moorcroft) that resulted in feeling bullied that I hated talking to them (phone, never to the house thankfully).
It was for money that I disputed, and I was only paying it because they were threatening me and bullying me with courts etc and demanding more money even though we'd had an agreement. Anyway, I went to the CAB about the dispute and they also said to me that I didn't have to talk to the debt agency and that the CAB officer would do all of that for me to sort it.
If they ever phoned me, all I had to say was that the CAB was dealing with it and the debt company have to LEGALLY leave you alone until the CAB has dealt with them.
I think they can get fined if they are still harassing you once the CAB is looking into your case. Is this making sense?
Go to the CAB office with your tenancy agreement too to show when you had moved in.
Good luck, go in tomorrow! Thank you to everyone!

This is horrifying. You must call the police McKay, not least simply because you were (and probably remain) so scared. Without wishing to alarm you, the debt still hasn't been settled, the company still links your address to this debt so what's to stop this despicable bully calling again?? You MUST contact the police. This guy's completely stupid anyway - he's identified the company he works for; it's not like he won't be traceable. What he's done is CRIMINAL (threatening someone sexually) and you need to report it.
Here's some general advice regarding debt collection agencies generally: They're not bailiffs; they have no right to enter your property; they certainly wouldn't be able to get a 'court warrant' as suggested. All of this is probably little comfort when you've got some thug on your doorstep threatening you and suggesting you prostitute yourself to pay someone else's debt.
Honestly, this has been me absolutely furious. Good luck with your complaint, McKay and I hope you can feel safe again soon x"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
Next time, don't get scared, get angry. Call the police immediately on 999 and tell them there is a large, strange mantrespassing on your property and threatening you sexually, standing on your doorstep and banging on your door. He has NO RIGHT to do this and you have every right to involve the police. I wouldn't call the neighbour immediately, you don't want him to get in trouble if he, for example, takes a swing at this thug and gets arrested for assault. Call him once the police are on their way but ask him not to come out as you want the police to catch him on your doorstep.
Oh, and don't tell the thug you have called the police, otherwise he will just run away. Just tell him you want him to go away as you have nothing to do with the person he looking for, then ignore him. Let him knock, shout and threaten as much as he wants.
He is simply hoping that he can intimidate you into paying a debt that has nothing to do with you - you have told them this, now the only time you should communicate with them (in writing, keep a copy & send registered mail) is to revoke their 'implied right of access' to your home (ie people assume they can enter your property to do things like deliver letters etc), which means that if this thug or another company representative even come past the boundary of your property let alone knock on the door, they are trespassing. I am sure there are templates of such letters knocking around somewhere on here...Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0
