Good removal companies that also do packing

I'm looking at a move from Cambridge to South London for a new job. I moved to Cambridge as my first job out of Uni so that was a case of scrounging a lift from a friend and throwing a couple of suitcases in his car; but I moved into an unfurnished flat so I don't think my friend is going to be quite so willing to move a couch, double bed, wardrobe and bookshelf in his little Golf! :rotfl:

So I'm looking at a proper removal service. I have a grand of my new employer's money to spend on relocation; I'm assuming this will be more than enough, even factoring in me being lazy and getting them to pack everything for me. Can anyone recommend a good removal company who won't break my TV and will magically make all my stuff reappear in my new flat without me having to worry about packing everything up myself? I've looked at Pickfords but only because of brand recognition; I have no idea of other alternatives.

Thanks in advance!

  • When I moved last year I used Clockwork and was very impressed with them.

However I would recommend you get quotes from at least three different companies as costs can vary enormously. Make sure everyone you contact is a member of BAR.

Avoid the local firm that will tap their nose and say "we won't charge you VAT" when they come to do an appraisal. Most likely they won't be insuring your stuff either.

I used GB Liners to pack and store for 3 months. Excellent packing and removal service, not cheap. Just lost a couple of mirror screws in the whole process, no breakages. Before any one remarks l already have a screw loose. :rotfl:

Sarchasm £1k is more than enough for a removal company to provide the boxes, pack, move you and even unpack your items. (Ask for a price with and without unpacking as it is not automatically included in the price).

It's worth looking at companies from London as well as locally as the length of journey is in effect the same.

Try http://www.rocketvan.co.uk/ who are very good, Clockwork are also good.

When you ring companies for a quote, they will ask you what floor your on, any lift, can they park near and how far the walk from van to property is (They will ask the same about the new property).

We had Johnsons who we got through House2home. They packed on the day, and blimey they used a lot of packing materials, everything got here in one piece and they were very understanding when we were not even sure if we were moving at all on the day (same day exchange and completion). They had to move a very fragile victorian marble washstand, which also arrived perfectly. Not sure how much it was, the builders paid for it, but they did a great job and even if next time we have to pay for them, we will.

Just to throw another one in the mix - Inline Removals. Deal with mainly East and South East London - used them three times now. Very competitive and brilliant service. Used them for packing and moving and really can't recommend them highly enough.

    Good luck!

We used the Pickfords based in Cambridge for our recent move, and they were excellent. Packed everything, nothing broken, very helpful in shifting things around and a lovely bunch of lads.

Also try Pretlove's who are local to Cambridge - we got them round to quote but they were more expensive than Pickfords; however several friends of ours have used them and thought they were very good.

I've moved 3 times so far with Team Relocations / TGG Global and found them excellent in terms of capability and execution. In addition to efficient packing, they can also assist with other aspects of a move like cancelling or transferring utility bills and redirecting mail.

I doubt they are relatively cheap, and I've used them at the expense of my employer too.

i have also been moved by Pickfords and thought that they were great
  • I used a company called jamandvan.co.uk (removal company in Hemel Hempstead) for my international move to France at the begining of the year, I had a guy to pack my stuff for me, it took him a day and they also stored my belonginings for a few weeks for me. They were very good I would definitely use them again.
