Can anyone please advise me of a circa price of a 7' x 2' x 4.8 metre joist? Looked online & err, not terribly clear to me.

Do you really mean 7 feet by 2 feet? :eek:0

I hope he doesn't mean 2" x 7" for a 4.8m span either!

ok bit early chaps. We're not at house- total renovation, but we think joists are 2" x 7" x 4.8....we could be wrong.
As current joists have signs of we believe historic woodworm, builder has quoted £200 to replace 6 joists - he currently has got to double joist the original joists anyway as hes taken out a steel beam (with bldg control approval - steel didnt seem to be supporting anything), so bldr & bldg control decided to take steel out & double joist as will give even kitchen ceiling.......
anyway as ceiling is currently open & builder already has to double joist, thought it was worth getting price from him to replace original joists at same time (quote £200 for 6 joists). But only 3 of these joists seem to be original - other 3 of them seem newer, though not new.
I'm trying to cost cut, so am waiting for builder to come back to me for price to replace 3 of the original joists....hence asking for price of replacement joist.0 -
I'd have thought 10" for that sized span.ok bit early chaps. We're not at house- total renovation, but we think joists are 2" x 7" x 4.8....we could be wrong.
So they've all gone then.As current joists have signs of we believe historic woodworm
If you are cutting [STRIKE]corners[/STRIKE] costs why not just leave them be?I'm trying to cost cut, so am waiting for builder to come back to me for price to replace 3 of the original joists....hence asking for price of replacement joist.
It seems to me that you don't trust him.Just checking to see if he is enhancing the labour charges...
It does - hope you and builder and BCO are right about it "not doing anything".

Thanks. Me being a bit/lot on the paranoid side.....
House is 97 yrs old, hence maybe smaller current joists - builder is doubling up on joists anyway.
RSJ thats come out - building control did authorised this on viewing & us/builder could not see it doing anything (maybe some alterations from earlier life in house - who knows)
Do trust builder, as much as I can trust a builder....just paranoid
As for woodworm, we have meticulously treated whole house - every single piece of timber has been sprayed/well doused in Solugard, so any wworm should be decimated....... as I say, me being paranoid and its so great to come on here & get reassurance from you guys. We're just doing the best we can.
Budget is tighter than tight - thats why I dont want to waste a single penny, but you guys may have said - well, who knows?0 -
Just to add some more humour... if the worm was 'decimated' then only 1 in 10 were killed, which leaves 90%!!:o
Though I am sure you meant that it was ALL dead.0
