Light humming

Recently had a replacement brand new alternator and battery all professionally fitted.

However, at idle the car makes a "like" humming noise, sounds abit like a turbo charger noise, but not that good.
When driving or at revs the noise disappears.

It's coming from around where the alternator is, but don't think from intial inspections it is coming from it.

Garage says it will go after afew 100 miles when the alternator is used a while.

This normal for a brand new alternator??

P.s it's a Ford Mondeo 2.5 V6 and I finally got it all done after months of driving with a alternator that was dying and a cell down in the old battery!

    Hi,

I have checked my Autodata CD3, my Husbands knowlegde and done a little online research for you.
We don't want to jump on the gravy train in believing we know whats wrong with it, when we don't by saying check this check that, it could be this, it could be that.
Autodata CD3 does not list any known alternator problems with the 2.5 V6
My Hubby who has 2 separate vehicle qualifications, says he has never heard of "some noise a brand new alternator makes thats normal and disapears after 100 miles".
He simply said, if it wasn't making that noise before you took it to the garage and it's making that noise now after the garage, then exercise your rights and take the vehicle back...no matter what they tell you.

As for the research there are many different things for example,
Alternator incorrectly fitted or belt tension too tight, inlet manifold, coolant pump, the actual timing casing not refitted properly, something leaning against your engine etc etc etc.

Please remember just because it's a garage thats supposed to be professional and the parts are supposed to be a new, doesn't mean to say they are.
In addition, even new items are faulty sometimes however on occasions; it can simply be assigned to poor or incorrect fitting.
Exercise your rights as a consumer and paying customer and take the vehicle back.

    Hope this helps!:)

Thank you for all your replies

The work is under warranty I am assured by the garage for two years, including both parts and labour.

The noise wasn't there before, and it isn't coming from the radio, I can hear it while standing by the car, as before when idling it's there when it's at revs it's as it was.

I am going to wait another week, clock afew more miles and if still no luck ring the garage and book it back in for investigation under warranty.

I thought at first it was air getting into the intake as it sounds like that but have checked all that and it's coming from the side f the engine, really baffling!

The garage is fobbing you off. I wonder if they've overtightened the drive belt.

There should be no noise from a new belt and alternator, infact it should be quieter for gods sake. The garage are having a girafe. Get it straight back.

    Thanks for all your replies.

Garage inspected the car the other day, looks like I now have a pulley on it's way out or maybe worn, as the old alternator had been dying for 3 years an under charging the battery for 3 years I'm told it's likely why I never noticed the noise but now it's all charging OK it's shown up.

Having to have it all striped down again for investigation and to see what it is.

Don't get carried away, or get shafted. This is a very minor job with very little stripping down to be done, kids play almost.:money:
