Help - Selling for absent child

My daughter has bought another property and wants to sell her flat but she is taking 6 months unpaid leave and will be treking in Bhutan so not very accessable.
Does anyone have experience of the legal requirement for dealing with selling a property for an absent owner?
Clearly we need legal advice but just wondering if anyone can help.

Would have thought she would have to hand over power of attorney to you to allow it.

    Power of Attorney.
  • I hope you are charging her for the service while she swans off!

Power of Attourney takes months to go through from experience.
I'd suggest she stays in touch by email and fax and try to organise EAs and give permission to start proceedings.

Hopefully the final stages of selling will be when she is back and able to do the work herself- it took about 4 months for my sale to go through so if its on the market a while she can do her own dirty work when she gets back. That is providing the EAs will allow it to be advertised in her absence.

I think she has got her priorities wrong and could end up paying through the nose for an empty property!

Thank you for your replies, that is the way I thought we would have to go.
Dorset Nurse - you could be right but I fully support her break away she has worked extremely hard and you only live once! She could easily stay to sell her flat and have no one interested in it at all, if the worst happens it will stay empty or a friend can move in until her return.
  • I agree she could do both- it sounds like she is still around by the tone of your post.
If I was her I would get a friend to rent it and put it on the market while she is still here. She would be able to go away and just consent changes to the EA when needed.
I would definately want all the loose ends sorted out if I was going travelling for 6 months!
