messy garden

hello everyone
can anyone give ideas on what to do with my messy garden. it is basically a square patch of grass with a border all the way around. sadly the border is more a weed bed. i was wondering if i got some bark mulch and put this on the borders would it stop the weeds from growing. many thanks in advance

It takes a very thick layer of mulch (12"+) to smother existing weeds which is impractical unless you are using a method such as lasagna gardening. You would be better off digging out the existing weeds (or spraying with weedkiller) then applying a 4" layer of mulch to limit the amount of new weeds that can grow in your border.

thanks for that, i thought about weedkiller, but because i have shrubs (inbetween the weeds) i didn't think this would be an option.

To deal with weeds that are growing in my border I use a plastic milk bottle with the bottom cut off, I put it over the weeds and put my weed sprayer through the top and then spray carefully this way the spray is contained. Remember to leave it in place for a few minutes to drain so that you don't drip weedkiller over the plants you are trying to protect
