I am off to New York and wonder if I could buy a DS lite there and would it work OK in UK

not sure myself, but what if you have a problem, i recently took my daughters faulty ds back to currys just as the guarantee was about to run out, they replaced it with no fuss0

I think it might as i dont think ds/gameby games are region coded . The only rhing is you would have to cahnge the plug on the charger to a uk one or use a travel adapter when using the charger.

There's no region coding but you would need a UK charger, I believe you can get them for about £5 on ebay. I think Game also sell them fairly cheaply.
As frestuffwoo said the only problem is if you have to return it. I would recommend thoroughly testing it and making sure there no dead pixels before you return to the UK.It's my problem, it's my problem
