cancelling car insurance renewal

My car insurance is due for renewal in 9 May, my existing insurer has sent a quote through for £230. So today I've gone through the comparison websites, just to make sure about any other deals, I've got 3 quotes back for £173 none of these is with my existing insurer, their quote came in at £327. so I phoned to cancel the automatic renewal due on the 9 May, I had to phone an 0871 nuumber, and stated at the start of the conversation I was ringing to cancel the automatic renewal that had come through for my car insurance, I explained I'd be cancelling due to the higher cost of their quote, and the fact that the lower quotes I'd received included EU travel for 30 days, theirs did not. Baring in mind I'm paying for this call, the operator then started asking questions about my yearly mileage, at this point I wanted to end my call (I just want to cancel and not pay for them asking me questions to get my custom back) The operator then proceeded to read a statement about my policy being cancelled on the 8 May and that it is illegal not to have car insurance, and that this information would be shown on the National car database where the police check insurance details etc, I know this and that is why I will be taking out another insurance to cover me from the 9 May, afterall I do have 22 days left to do this!
I have been driving since 1986 I have always taken out car insurance, MOT's etc, and felt like the implication of me cancelling my renewal with this company was that they thought I was not going to be taking out any future car insurance and so driving iliegally without it, I'm annoyed now, having to pay for an 0871 number and then having them make their sales speil, and then a lecture at the end, charming.

You could've written a letter instead, couldn't you?0

I understand your point perfectly. I have just renewed my insurance and have gone back to a high street broker where i can pay in cash and be treated like I matter. Perhaps print off your best quote and take it to a local broker and see if they can get close to matching it. I won't be buying car insurance over the net again.0
