We are leaving late this morning, so it might be clear by then, but would like a good back up plan. We live near the Dartford Tunnel end of the M25.

Got a wedding to go to, on the Sunday.

Would like to save time and petrol. ;)

Many thanks.

I would go M25 to M40, then when you get to south Birmingham take the M42 west to the M5, then M5 north, until you get to the M6.

The M42 the other way (past Solihull) and M6 from junction 4 - 10 can be a nightmare (i live in Birmingham) whereas the M5 route cuts a lot of that out...
  • Ossie is spot on, either way depending on latest news on Highways Agency or similar site, remember M11/A14 is dualled where M40 is 3 lane.

Keep the TA turned on on your car radio, if the M6 has problems north of B'ham you can take the M54/A5/A483 route instead to A55, and you always have the option of the M6 toll road rip off if B'ham Nth is snarled up.

Done this route a few times, when we go up to West Midlands from East London/Dagenham area. According to Google, its only about 30 miles and 15min longer. But the A14 is often lovely, quiet and fast. Beats all the 50 mph sections all up the M1.
M11 is normally alright, sometimes bit congested near M25 and Standstead.
  • "its only about 30 miles and 15min longer" = 120 miles/hour?

The A14 lovely, quiet and fast?

It's the worst road in the UK IMHO.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Only the stretch between the M11 split and Huntingdon is bad.

But the M1 is only closed between J1 and J4 isn't it?

Just join the M1 at J6a from the M25 as I imagine you would do normally.
