FREEVIEW in the west country

Hello just a quick one,

My sister is moving to Dursley (South of Stroud but north of Bristol) and she want to take her freeview box with her. According to the freeview.org web site her post code (GL11) is not covered.

I read in other forums that this guide is not always accurate and even when it's pointing that there is no cover actually there is. Anyone from the area can tell me if freeview is avilable or not? Thanks

  • Hi,

I live in Devon which I know is a little further down but according to the Freeview site a large part of the Westcountry isn't covered. Although my address is showing as not covered I was told by a local aerial installer that with the right equipment you can get it anywhere here.

In fact, my next door neighbours have it. It cost them over £150 and their aerial looks like something the space station would be proud to have but they do get a good picture.

    Hope this helps.
  • The only sure way to find out is to plug her Freeview box in when she gets there and see what happens. However I am not optimistic.

Viewers in Dursley are likely to be using the Ridge Hill transmitter. Because of the frequencies and low transmitter power currently used, if they want Freeview now they will need to get new aerials. However once analogue is switched off the frequencies will be juggled around, the power increased and the old aerials will probably be OK for Freeview.

So, unless your sister is desperate for Freeview I would advise her not to pay out for a new aerial.
