Buying: Getting the survey before anything else?

Hello people,
After having an offer accepted on a place and the mortgage agreed. is it normal to NOT do the searches until AFTER the result of the surveys?

I want to do it this way, as if survey is po0p, i dont want to waste money on the solictor searches etc... and I dont want to sound out-of-turn by saying this to my solictor, and estate agent.

What do you think?

Thanks muchly
Me :-)

I didn't - I did the survey at the same time, and am now out of pocket after a rubbish survey.

So next time I'll be doing the survey first.

Survey or valuation, then instruct solicitor to do searches when you're happy with the property and you can't go to the next step without spending money. ;)

I've always just got everything moving as quickly as possible, at the same time if it so happens... Never waited for survey results before getting searches done.

oh im just being cautious though. the Property has an extension that got retrospective planning permission. has also had a major refurb after being bought at auction last october.
also upstairs flat has been vacant for a while (unknown reason.. and only just gone on the market).
so there may be nowt to worry about, but I'm just being cautious this time.

Depends how time critical things are. If critical, do both in parallel.

Depends if you think the searches are more likely to throw up problems, or the survey! Pay for one, the other might produce a show-stopper.

After wasting such a lot of money on solicitors fees when our survey showed major issues I would do survey/valuation first. I reckon that the mortgage application takes the longest so if you are a FTB with small deposit. Don't let the EA bully you into getting the solicitor straight away - get a surveyor that can go in asap.

That may have been your experience, but someone else might have paid for a survey, got the all clear, instructed a solicitor and then found problems with the property Title, the Lease, council/environmental search etc and pulled out kicking themselves for wasting £ on the survey!
