When you say that they have had this changed I presume you are talking about the timing belt. The fact that it has 3 cylinders imo is not an issue although the 1.2 will be nipier and will also be low insurance. If the timing belt has recently been changed have a look at the paperwork to check this, then you will be ok for at least the next 30k miles(havent checked the replacement schedule but would be suprised if less than this). Once you have it checked over by someone who knows what they are doing and if you like it I would go for it if the deal is right. Good luck
  • regardless of what other people think of a prospective purchase, you have to work out what you can afford to run and what you cant, a car is a car yes it's a 3 cylinder engine, yes they have timing chains, if the chain was done not so long ago, and has proof, then thats a load off your mind and an expense you dont have to pay out on.

if YOUR happy with it then thats all that matters.

Vauxhall did issue a recall on the timing chains on the 1.0's are they were prone to fail. This also took out the oil pump and you often read horror stories online about them.

But to be honest 95% of car reviews online are full of problems and complaints. No one ever thinks "oh I know, my car so good I'm going to write to a magazine or an internet website and tell them...".

The 1.0 is quite fun to thow about TBH and I used to love it when we got the 0.8 litre Daewoo Matiz's in! :)

Dunno about the 2002 model but the 2003 models onwards have timing chains on the 1.0 & 1.2.

Normally you don't have to change a timing chain at all. So I would be asking why it was changed. But the previous post does shed some light on why it might have been done.

If it does have a timing belt & not a chain then it is possible that it had a service interval of 8 years/80,000 miles which makes sense that it has just been changed. I would want to know what belt it was replaced with and what the new belts service interval is - you get different qualities of belts, an original high spec Vauxhall would last another 8 years, a cheaper type maybe only 4 years/40K

The 1.2 is a far better engine TBH and the difference in purchase price and insurance is negligible.
