I've found Genuine CHEAP ENERGY-both Gas and Electricity

Options
Over the last 6 months I had been trying to save myself some money on my energy bills. For the last 20 years I had bought my gas from British Gas and electricity from EDF Energy but after reading about the "dual fuel" discounts available decided to buy both from a single supplier. After doing a bit of checking I wrongly thought that British Gas would be the best supplier as they offered me "No Standing Charge",a £15.00 /year dual fuel discount and the same price for electricity as I had been paying EDF.Also I could keep using my prepayment meters so I assumed that I would save myself a little bit -even if it was just the £1.26/week standing charge and £15.00 a year dual fuel discount. How wrong I was  Within a few days of the switch over I had a visit from the British Gas meter reader and was very suprised to learn that I was actually paying £1.71 per week standing charge for my electricity-it was there in front of me clearly displayed on my prepayment meter.I then phoned British Gas who tried to tell me that the meter was wrong-Smell of horse manure!! They tried to tell me that as my meter was 19 years old it was showing this standing charge in error and I was not paying the £1.71 a week at all BUT was actually paying about 24p a kwh for the first 1.9 kwh that I used each day and this then dropped to roughly 13p per kwh. With EDF I paid a single rate of about 13p a kwh so British Gas were charging me more for the standing charge and about the same amount as EDF for the electricity. The gas supply also had a standing charge of just under a pound a week plus whatever gas I used. This was supplied at the same rate as I was previously paying.Feeling like I was being scammed by British Gas I had another look on the internet for an energy supplier as I was really miffed with them.I found EBICO who have now been supplying me with both gas and electricity for the last few weeks. With them I pay NO STANDING CHARGES at all.My electricity meter clearly shows that this is true.I now pay a single rate for my electricity of 13.4p/kwh and although this is a fraction of a penny more than with British Gas I will still save money unless I suddenly start to use a heck of a lot more.I must say that I live alone and don't use that much energy and others in the same situation should check out EBICO as they could probably save themselves a fair bit as well.Regarding the gas I use-EBICO are charging me roughly 60% of the price per unit that I was paying British Gas so I'm really making a saving on this and there is no standing charge either which makes it even sweeter.I'm so glad that I have changed over as I can clearly see that I'm quids in now.I have saved myself around £100 a year by switching and this is on what used to be a total spend of roughly £425 a year.Just the standing charges for the supply of both gas and electricity was costing me about £130 each year so even when I allow for paying a little more for each kwh of electricity I use I am still making a massive saving percentage wise compared to my previous outlay. This amount of saving will not be possible for everyone to achieve but people who like me use a small amount of energy each year could truly save themselves a considerable amount.I would suggest that you all check it out for yourselves to see if you can save. Finally I want to make you aware of the fact that EBICO state that they are a "non-profit making" concern-this seems wrong or just plain crazy to me as in this day and age nobody does something for nothing.Personally I don't give a "monkeys" about what their motivation is -all I'm interested in is getting my energy supplied at the lowest possible cost to me.I hope that this thread will help some of you readers to save yourself a few pounds-I'm not an employee of Ebico giving them a plug-i'm just a happy customer who is very pleased and thought that I could share the benefit of my experience with you.:j:j:j

It is not GENUINE cheap energy - it is subsidised by idiots (or vulnerable innumerate victims) who are not as savvy as you. It is not sustainable.

Ebico has been going for years now so why Kim would say it's not sustainable I have no idea. They are an ethical non-profit company who believe in charging everyone the same no matter how they pay.

Okay, I admit technically it is sustainable - I think more than 70% of customers with the big six are on the standard tariff so I am sure there are more than enough ignorant consumers to be beguiled by Ebico's deceptive (but superficially transparent) tariffs.

Damn, I hate tariffs about Ebico - they make me look like Mr Hitchens* pamphleteering against Mother Teresa and Princess Diana.

    * Okay, I confess, I can never remember which Hitchens is which ;).

I used to be a customer of Ebico, not because I was ignorant or stupid but because I liked their ideals and I could afford not to choose the absolute cheapest supplier for me. Sadly, I can no longer afford to be ethical and have to be more selfish.

    PS.. it's Christopher Hitchens

    I'm pleased you're happy paying 13.4p/kwh, I wouldn't be.

Half an hour ago I switched to BGas websaver 11, and my tier two day units are 9.66p, night units are 4.08p. The tier one units equate to a standing charge of £9.52 per month, but I also get a £3.33pm discount.

You must be a low user to benefit swapping £6.19 pm for an extra 3.8p/kwh. Are you sure you've done your calcs correctly for a full year, and not just the spring/summer months? You have to use less than an average of 163kwh/month, or more correctly 1955 kwhpa to gain on the above numbers. (The breakeven point is even less for those not on economy seven). In the cold December last year, just in that one month, I used 2,200kwh).

What's your annual usage? (Note your rates from BG for websaver 11 may be more or less than mine, unless you're in seeboard's area).

OP Unless you are a very low user you are not making a saving by using Ebico.
You would be advised to enter your usage figures in Kwh into a comparison site.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

That isn't a prepayment meter tariff as the OP states.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • I'm a very very low energy user as my heating comes from a communal supply and the only gas I use is for an ascot style water heater-I have an electric shower.I use a typical single persons amount of electricity,fridge/freezer,tv,cooker,lighting computer etc and this was roughly £10 worth bought every 2 weeks throughout the year on my prepayment key.Last year I spent only £300 on electricity for the whole year and about £130 on gas so i'm certainly a low rate consumer who was paying almost 33% of my total expenditure on standing charges. The figures stacked up for me to change supplier and I thought that it could be the same for others in the same position and it would be worth them checking things out.
