Can I be sacked if I'm accused of benefit fraud

I recently found out I am being investigated for benefit fraud. I am terrified that I will lose my job through this.

I work part time for A&A NHS and take care of my disabled father who lives with me. I have not been committing benefit fraud - but believe that errors have been made on both sides. This was the first time I have ever claimed benefits.

As I work for the nhs I am worried that this could lead to dismissal. I love my job and work really hard at it. I am not money orientated and as long as i have enough to make ends meet im happy. I work hours and hours extra without payment as there is no money for paid overtime and I am happy to do this as it's not about money but about doing a job I care about.

I can't get it into my head why they would think that I would defraud them out of a few quid carers allowance from one public purse and give in abundance to another public purse.

Does anyone know the policy within the nhs. Is there a chance I could lose my job? When I hear from DWP I will discuss this with my manager but wonder if anyone knows what I am likely to expect?

If you are CONVICTED of benefit fraud I imagine it could affect your employment

Do you think the MPs that have just been convicted for defrauding the tax payer for fiddling their expenses could use that as a defence?

Unfortunately if you are found guilty and convicted then you could come unstuck.

technically you cannot be sacked for suspicion/while being investigated however they can ,subject to your work contract suspend you while the investigation and any court proceedings are dealt with
the phrase 'sub judice' comes to mind

tortmad, you have not been convicted of anything yet. My guess is that a neighbour has grassed-you up because they wrongly believe you are claiming benefits whilst working. The DWP will interview you, then work-out if you have accidentally had an over-payment or not.

Until then, DO NOT PANIC. Your boss cannot do anything. If they dismissed you for being 'under suspicion' of benefit fraud, then imagine the claim you would have against them if you were cleared. Even the NHS won't risk that.
