For those that are getting their panties in a twist; I don't need any lectures on what you or I think is/is not fair. I wasn't asking if I "think it's fair to buy a house dirt cheap and then collect a nice little rent for it" was fair.

Ask a question on a public forum full of council tax and income tax-paying home owners and renters, the same ones you plan to diddle, and what do you expect?

You've had better advice than you deserve.

Can't see anyone was getting their panties in a twist. You asked a question on a public forum and got honest straightforward replies.

Next step, somehow - get myself into a secure coucil house and look to buy it in years to come.
Or just buy a house in the normal way.

It was a legitimate question. I too pay all my taxes and always have done. Tell me, how am I planning on "diddling" anyone. If this option of a cheap home was open to the tennant of the house, who can blame me to see if I could take advantage of the situation. Technically, I (as have you) have been paying for that house and many others like it for years. I thought I could grab something back.

You see, that's the problem. Contributors to this topic thought I may be getting soemthing that they're not and immediately took a negative stance on the situation.
Instead of answering my questions, they then decided to assume my intentions.

The majority of replies were helpful, just a few that really grind my gears.

    Or perhaps a moral compass?

I didn't need to assume your intentions. A quote from your post number 14 says it all:
"I thought I could grab something back"

If mother was then to end up in a care home, the whole value of the house could be taken back as fees.

Why not just buy a house like most people do?

Technically, that is a completely wrong assertion. Local Authority tenants are not subsidised by anyone.

I don't blame anyone for trying to play the system. It's not a system I would have designed, but many have got away with it. But there is no way the OP could have got the house without endangering the future security of a relative.

Get over the disappointment and save up for a house in the normal way. Will probably be quicker and cheaper than playing the system to get a council house you don't need, just for a small discount after several years.

Searching this forum for "RTB" will bring up many similar discussions started by people wanting to buy their elderly parent's home. The advice is always the same, and the discussion usually ends in recriminations.
