in Cutting tax
Hi
Just wondering if somebody could help with regards car tax.
I used to have my car in my name and I was paid a petrol allowance each month.
Things changed in the middle of last year and the car is now being classed as a company car and I have a fuel card to fill the car up during the month.
I am then charged at the end of the month for any private mileage I have done each month.
To be honest, I have no idea what they are charging per mile, I put all the information in to an excel sheet, putting my business mileage in and total mileage for the month and that then shows the remaining as private mileage and they make the charge from there, taking it directly from my wages.
I have claimed tax back before when I was paid an allowance but I am now unsure if I can claiming anything back, I thought I would just ask.
I have not called the tax office as I do not want to open up a tin of worms.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
Martin

Hi
Do you mean that you either- sold your car to the company and they now own it but you still use it, or
- you still have your car but the company has given you another car which is now your company car, or
- nothing has changed in that you still own your car and use it for business but now you also have a fuel card for all pertol.
Technically, you would owe to them the cost of all the fuel you have bought on the card, against which they owe back to you a mileage allowance at 40p (now 45p for new tax year) per business mile travelled (reducing to 25p for miles in excess of 10,000).
They are working this out from your sheets and taking back the excess each month.
If this is the case, it's all fine and you don't have anything to 'tell' the tax office (but you should really ask your employer to explain it all to you - you should be able to understand the basis of your remunneration and it's their duty to explain it to you).
If there was anything to report, and you do have a company car then your employer is under a duty to tell HMRC, anyway - so they (would) know already.....
