De-Energized Meter - Having trouble signing up with NPower
One month ago I moved into my home as a tenant, and I am still trying to create a account with a energy supplier.
I am trying to create an account with NPower, but they cant add me to their system until we provide them with certain reference numbers which are apparently on the bills of the previous supplier, none of the numbers on the meters are useful to them apparently. And they informed us our electricity meter is de-energized, but we are still receiving a supply.
We are not certain who the previous supplier is, we have no bills, and the previous tenants are very sketchy about who the supplier was. Npower told us they think it might be EDF, but when we ring EDF they dont seem to have any records.
The house was converted into 2 flats 7 years ago, and the previous tenants have lived there since that time. There are 2 gas meters out side the front of the property, and 2 electricity meters in the hall, one is a pre-pay meter for the people who live upstairs and the other is a normal meter which is ours. Is it possible the previous tenants have been getting free electricity?
What should I do? How do it (should I) get supply?
I have already spent 10s of pounds on phone calls, I was thinking of just leaving it till if/when a bill arrives and then take it from there. Is that the correct course of action?

The credit meter will have a serial number on it, when you phone a supplier (any supplier) if you given them this they can check on the central register for that serial number. They can also search by your address.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

@spiro Thanks for the reply. Yeah at worked for the Gas. But they said the number (L83A6XXXX) on the electric meter was not of any use to them.0

look up what area you stay in and phone and ask for your MPAN and they will tell you how supplys your address.

With that serial number this is a meter that would have originally been installed in the London Elec area and was manufacturer in 1983. Based on that phone UK Power Networks on 0845 601 5467 and they should be able to tell you (a) your MPAN and (b) your current supplier. If they can't tell you the MPAN, then as the owner of the network (I'm assuming your in the London elec area) you need the to investigate as they make the connections and issue the MPANs.@spiro Thanks for the reply.
