. I think it would be good if , when someone starts their first job, to have some kind of leaflet to let them know the basics of paye, about tax codes, forms etc. Just to let them know what to expect, what their rights are etc.
Ermmmm...lets just say that I read this post before you edited it.
For those who DIDNT let me tell you that this ^^^^^post is a lot kinder than the original one in which longforgotten wasnt so pleasant :rotfl:The loopy one has gone :j0 -

This time last week my Daughter didnt know what a P60 was...now she does.....she also knows what to do if its incorrect.
Thats the best way to learn in my opinion...from experience. The loopy one has gone :j0 -
I think it is a shame that the basics of PAYE NI Pensions etc aren't included in PSME at school. My kids seemed to learn some strange stuff but nothing about this. I always try to make time with young staff to explain how it all works and encourage them to talk to me if there is a problem or they don't understand something. I run a payroll for over 100 staff and, like everyone, I make mistakes from time to time and I think it is better if people understand the basics and can let me know if they think something is wrong.
When my DD was 17 she had a job and they tried to rip her off over SSP. Obviously we initially thought they had just made a mistake but it quickly became apparent that this wasn't the case. First of all they told her she had received all she was entitled to, when challenged they increased the amount twice before they agreed to pay her the full amount. I gave her all the information but left her to sort it out. She was so thrilled when she got nearly £300 they owed her, alot of money when you are doing A levels and saving for uni. I was shocked that a large national firm would try to rip her off like this.Sell £1500

Is daughter paying any taxes (Income and/or NI) according to this P60?
[I ask as this thread takes me back some 15 years and I find myself revisiting similar moral dilemmas:
Daughter started a part time job with a well known national chain aged 14 and did it for about 36 months before getting a similar job with another chain at considerably better remuneration (including tips).
My initial reaction was that a 17 year old should stand on her own two feet, but then I remembered that when chain one was taken over during her 36 months, tax chaos resulted and I had to get involved. Daughter was getting nowhere with a certain Scottish tax office, after the company that took over decided to put her on "BR" tax and not the former employer's "Student" status.]
Personally, from bitter experience, I would not poke any bureaucracy with a stick, unless the outcome was to my benefit (or seriously in the public interest - eg MP's expenses).
