moving to london advice

Hi just looking for some advice on living in London,

Just finishing university and will be moving in the summer to start work on the tube lines, around Whitechapel station and Liverpool Street station. It’s going to be all new for me so be much appreciated for advice on the best location to rent a room or flat. Budgets will be maximum of £250 without bills (don’t know if that’s enough for London) be me and other graduate living there (two bedrooms). Will be doing long shifts so it doesn’t need to be 5* quality just somewhere dissent to sleep and shower in the week. Also how much is council tax for a two bed flat?

Thanks

    £250 a month?

Please tell me you mean a week. That's more than enough. £250 a month will barely get you space under a bridge.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • You can get a houseshare for approx £270-£300 a month in some of the less desirable areas of London, but you will have a longer commute.

Whatever you think it will cost to live in this city, double it. If you'll be working at Liverpool Street you should probably have a look at the main-line train routes out of there and select somewhere near one of the stations.

The Council Tax for properties vary from borough to borough so it's impossible to give you an accurate figure. I rent a two-bed in Haringey and it's £100 a month. I'm a 15 minute train-ride from L'pool St and it costs just under £6 a day return. The further out you go the more the cost in fares but the rents should be lower.

I take it you will be working nights on the Tube lines?

If you have 250 a week you should be able to get something around Bow/ Stepney which is bril into Liverpool street/ whitechapel, the 25 bus goes straight up the mile end road all day long. About 20 mins on the bus from bow to whitechapel in heavy traffic or 2/3 stops on the tube.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Depends what kind of standard of accommodation and what area you want to live in - I'd suggest trying gumtree as that's great for places normally

So you're looking to rent a 2-bed flat, you and your mate, rather than to each go into an established house share with others.

No idea ... but £250/month sounds ridiculously cheap for anywhere in the country I'd have thought.

Maybe your best/first bet, to get established, would be to look to both rent in an established house that happens to have two rooms going.... bigger the place, cheaper the rent as stuff's shared.

When I first moved to London about three years ago I found a room in an established house share (with three other people) in Hackney, that I paid £350/month for with bills all-inclusive. I could walk to Liverpool St in 20 minutes from there.

I think £250/month is optimistic, but as others have said - if you can find an established house share you may be able to find something within budget. I would focus your search on Hackney as it's slightly cheaper (no tube lines).

I lived in Bow for years and "commuted" to Liverpool St, it was an ideal location.
