Driving lessons/Teenage transport

Options
I'm trying to work out the best way to help my cousin towards some driving lessons for his birthday.

I've considered putting some money towards his CBT (learner motorcycle test), or possibly actual driving lessons, but trying to work out which is most financially viable for him is a nightmare with vehicle cost, tax, insurance & running costs to take into account.

Does anyone know if there are any amazing deals out there to be had, or have any advice on which way to go with the birthday buying? And any advice for getting him on the road in general?

Cheers, Kat.

Sisters lad wants a motorbike. This is someone thats broken his arm twice falling off a pushbike and
also broken it falling over the dog.

Financially viable = walking. Cost of a licence and buying a car/insurance tax fuel etc. ouch..
Bikes are not that cheap either.

If they want to join the motoring madness then taking a full car test sooner rather than later is the way to go.

I started a thread here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3162394 about the costs of riding a motorbike. Perhaps that'll help. I think motorbike is likely to work out cheaper, but as others have said safety might be an issue.

CBT costs seem to vary a lot by region. The going rate in London including bike hire seems to be around £120 for a first try and the cheapest I've found is £90. Outside of London, probably about a third less but I don't really know.

If he goes the motorbike route, make sure the helmet he gets is new. This is one thing where 2nd hand off eBay is not the greatest idea.

Brother in law paid £60 for his 1st CBT 2004 ish, Sure he said it was over £100 last time.

Safety and theft are big issues. Mate had his stolen from a locked garage recently. They actually jacked his car up
to move it away from the garage door.
