Need some plumbing advice

Ok Here’s my dilemma…

When we fitted our own kitchen my dad did the plumbing for us. He is NOT a plumber! We just got a new dishwasher and put it onto the connections that are shared with our washing machine, that then in turn goes back along to our sink and waste.

Thing is that this morning I have come downstairs and found my lovely newly fitted wood floor soaking wet and offering to warp, under the new dishwasher area.

I pulled the dishwasher forward and the floor is soaking underneath where the dishwasher was sitting.. leaving the dishwasher out in the open kitchen I put it on the same programme I had run it on last night and every other night and not one single drip has appeared??? My husband said that last night I had both the dishwasher and washing machine on at the same time (which I don’t recall!) but if I did why has it flooded ??

I have the waste pipes for both the dishwasher and the washing machine about 70 cms apart on the same waste pipe with a slight (very slight) run away from both appliances towards the kitchen sink waste. The waste pipes sit hooked into an upright short piece of pipe that is long enough for them to sit and does not allow the end to sit in water. But this pipe is open, not a sealed connection. Sorry if this sounds total nonsense but it’s really hard to describe!!

Can anyone advise what I can do to help my situation? Any ideas why the area under the dishwasher has become soaked??

I used to run my other dishwasher and washing machine together before without any problems?

Please help. I really can’t afford a plumber to come and investigate this and i cant afford to get my floor any wetter as it will be ruined, if it isnt already!

Is the waste pipe that you are feeding into open at the top if so what has happened is that the water could not get away quick enough so overflowed out of the open end. The solution is to get a fittings for your drain pipe from the sink that is closed other than the sink plug hole. These are the ones where you push the waste pipe onto a bit like a gardening hose. This will ensure that if there is a problem the water will just back up into the sink and not onto the floor. Wicks or B&Q staff are quite good if you explain what you want.

I suspect lowbrim is correct, if both machines were on at once your waste pipe may not have coped with the drain off from both so it backed up overflowed.

If you seal them off and connect as per the suggestion you will need a Non return valve.

Other options include increasing your waste pipe diameter which is probably overkill or (and this is a bit of a bodge) use expanding foam to lock in your existing appliance waste pipe to the top of the plastic drain pipe. Not something i would recommend but i have seen it done many times and it works.
  • Hi

If your waste pipe goes out side and into an open gully, see if it is blocking up.
It's also possible your waste pipe inside is starting to block and only backs up when a lot of water is sent down it. Do you have one of these for the machine?
