    update,

i have reinstalled avira, but just the free version so far, and all is well.I do have the option to run the avira premium security suite. should i do this first ?.
i have run spybot and it found a thing called 'facemoods', and have now got rid of it, ran spybot again and it found nothing:).

I don't know what you mean by removing a firewall, should i stop zone alarm. I don't know what forcefield is ?.
If avira firewall is poor, which should i use?, sorry but i have no idea with this stuff.
I will start ploughing through the link from 'closed', today as time allows.
Thanks for trying to help me, it really does help.

Put Avira full suite on including firewall, and uninstall Zonealarm. Avira doesn't do well in the leak tests (as in blocking unwanted traffic leaving your computer) but it's not really designed for that & is fine for blocking unwanted things incoming. If you want a better (but more intrusive) firewall, then disable Avira's firewall and install something like Comodo firewall (without the antivirus) or Online Armour.

Glad you got rid of the facemoods thing, now get rid of the rest of those toolsbars and any unnecessary startups & services as per Closed's miniguide. When you think you are done please post another HijackThis log and we can see how you've done compared to the log you did before System Restore & suggest a few more things that need fixing.

or Privatefirewall 7 (it didn't like my netbook and crashed at one stage, but seems fine on the main computer).

Either way, put on the full suite and only have one firewall running.

If 2 third party firewall are installed (one not even running) ive known computers crash or even continously reboot

Im not saying it will, I just wouldnt risk it

Fair enough. I've never worried too much about software firewalls, so never had the problem of too many of them running until now.

In that case which do you think he'll be overall better protected with:

1/ Avira free + Windows firewall
2/ Avira premium (including Avira firewall)
3/ Avira premium (Avira firewall disabled and Windows firewall enabled)

Dunkyboy, is there are way to install the licenced version of Avira without the firewall? i.e. can you 'downgrade' your package to the Avira AntiVir Premium instead of 'Avira Premium Security Suite'?

    Yikes,
don't get mad with me, but i have been busy

i have uninstalled avira lock stock and barrell
    i have uninstalled zone alarm

i have downloaded and installed avast full protection for 1 PC (for £19, i took the link from ' closed post') and this is all i have running. I have done a scan and it found nothing :j phew.
I looked on my control panel - security - and it says i have a firewall on, and the avast says i have a firewall on aswell, so do i turn one of them off ?, so i only have 1 running.
Have i done enough, am i ok now.

Premium doesnt have the firewall, only the security suite does
