  • I agree with much of the original post - but it does depend on the wines too, so a direct comparison is not always possible. A couple of decent wines which I often get on the 3 for 2 permanent 'offer' at Thresher are not available at Tesco and the selection at Tesco (particularly in store) is pretty poor, lots of boring big brand wines like Blossom Hill, Gallo etc.

Waitrose is still probably the best of the supermarkets for wine, but otherwise seek out your local independent shop or one of the smaller online retailers like Stone, Vine & Sun or BBR - yes, you may pay a little more but the quality is much higher. And as for Threshers, there are bargains to be had - for example Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc is £3.60 with the 40% off - a bargain for good quality everyday drinking white wine and you only need to buy 1 bottle rather than 6 in case you don't like it. If you prefer red then Vineyard X Garnacha for example is a good cheap bt decent enough everyday red and only £2.69 a bottle with the 40% off. There are also a few decent French, NZ and Australian wines around £8 or £9 which come down to a decent price with 40% off...

I went into a Thresher the other day and taking Wolf Blass as an example the Cabernet Sauvignon was roughly £8.99 per bottle but was in their 3 for 2 which brings the price down to £5.99 (in line with buying a bottle at Tesco). HOWEVER, the 3 for 2 is not included in the 40% offer.

    So buying 6 at Threshers:

    6 x 8.99 = 53.94 - 40% (21.58) = £32.36

    At tesco

    6 * 5.99 = 35.94 - 25% (6 bottle discount= 8.98) = £26.96

I must admit they had a lot of 3 for 2 but the prices were inflated so buying 3 meant it was brought into line with a single bottle at tescos but again as the 3 for 2 wasn;t included in the 40%, I walked out.
    Waddle you do eh?

Thanks for posting Carl, I appreciate Martin posting this voucher but in hindsight the offer really isn't good at all.

I'm sure the site wouldn't stop the press for a 6% off at asda code, which is effectively what the code is.

However, I think we all agree Martin is allowed a little slip up once in a while, given how magnificent this site is!

Well for me this promotion is far from a slip up by Martin. Considering my local Tesco's is 3 miles away, and Threshers, 2 mins walk, this voucher has saved me more money and time than having to bother traipsing to Tesco.

I saved £30 more with the Threshers deal than I would have if I had shopped at Tesco. So it can work!

I see Virgin wine have a "Don't settle for 40% off when you can have 50% off" offer, https://www.virginwines.com

Seems to be on some cases, like http://www.virginwines.com/product/wine_plan.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442977244&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374303180733&aff=virgin&bmUID=1165163529401 but not on everything, although there are some other offers there. Using Carl_east's example, Moet is £17.99 a case, but there may be some better offers on the site if you know what you're looking for.

This does depend on the branch of Tesco. Try a Tesco in a reasonably affluent area and the wine range is usually fabulous including a fine wine section - with fine wine prices!

I certainly believe a lot of the Tesco deals represent good value. The initial price is usually competitive - though i don't think i've ever paid full price for a bottle of wine.

They are currently doing Laurent Perrier Rose at £25 a bottle once the discount and additional £15 off has been applied. This retails for around £40 per bottle in many other stores. Treat yourself for Christmas!
It's not the taking part but the winning that counts.

The Best Bargain in Champagne at the moment is in Marks & Spencers - they have Oudinot Brut at £5 per bottle off, which brings it down to £12.50 ish. This champagne came in the top 10 of a blind tasting held by Which!
No.1 was Sainsbury's Vintage Reserve but that is £17 odd a bottle.
Other bargains in fizz are :-
Heidsick Brut £11.99 at Majestic if you buy 2 bottles.
Nicholas Feulliate Vintage 2002 at £12.99 (50%) off also at Majestic.
These last 2 bargains were gleaned from :-

A really useful website if you want to find who is selling a particular wine at the best price!

I have to say that I'm struggling to believe that you saved £30 at Threshers on the Tesco price. In fact I would go as far to say that is absolute rubbish. You've obviously not used the £15 off a £50 spend discount code in your price. Given that you can split you order if it's over £100 and get two lots of £15 off to.

This isn't quite right. The online price is £45.54 at Tesco. But the 25% off gives you it for £34.14. So that's slightly more expensive than the Threshers price. But buy a case for £68.28 then add £5 postage but take away £15 by using the discount coupon and you get is for £58.28 for the case. That's £29.14 for 6 compared to the £32.36 at Threshers.

What's most annoying is that this offer has made it on to the BBC and everyone who isn't really in the know is now saying that this is a mistake and should only be offered to family of employees. Lol! I've just heard a girl across from me talking about it! Point proven.

This is the best marketing ploy that has ever been done by Threshers. They deserve a lot of credit for this as well as the money that they'll be making.

Why not just ask them what they bought and for how much? ;);)
